Perseverance Rover Lands On Mars Surface

Perseverance is Nasa’s largest and most advanced rover they’ve sent to Mars to date. The world watched live on February 18, 2021, as the 2,200 pound vehicle touched down on the surface of Mars. It traveled nearly 293 million miles to get to the alien surface. The mars entry team excitedly waiting a terrifying 7 minutes before data started to stream back from Mars into mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California . Confirmation of the touchdown was voiced through the headphones of the mars entry team at 3:55 p.m. EST. The Mars team jumping and applauding with excitement.

The Mars 2020 mission launched on July 30 of 2020, from the newly renamed Space Force Station in Cap Canaveral Florida. The Perseverance mission is packed with new technologies and experiments and a historical first for NASA as they attempt to collect samples from the surface and return them to Earth in a later mission.

NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said “This landing is one of those pivotal moments for NASA, the United States, and space exploration globally when we know we are on the cusp of discovery and sharpening our pencils, so to speak, to rewrite the textbooks,” . “The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission embodies our nation’s spirit of persevering even in the most challenging of situations, inspiring, and advancing science and exploration. The mission itself personifies the human ideal of persevering toward the future and will help us prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.”

Nasa will conduct several weeks of testing on Perseverance before it begins its two-year science mission of Mars at  Jezero Crater. The rover will investigate Jezero craters’ ancient lakebed and river delta to determine past geology and climate. The main mission of Persercerance is to search for signs of ancient microbial life. Which will be concluded by the Mars Sample Return mission planned by NASA and the European Space Agency. Which will send samples back to earth allowing scientists to study those samples in search for signs of life.

Jezero Crater sits on the western edge of Isidis Planitia. It is a giant impact basin 28 miles wide, that sits just north of the Martian equator. Scientists have determined that the crater was filled with water some 3.5 billion years ago. So Perseverance will scour the Jezero region for fossilized remains of ancient microscopic Martian life, taking samples along the way.

Perseverance is the most sophisticated robotic geologist ever made. It is Equipped with “seven primary science instruments”. In using that quote from NASA, Its possible there are more instruments which would be called secondary instruments that wouldn’t know about.  Its also equipped with the most advanced HD cameras ever sent on a rover. Its rumored to even have an HD video camera, that can record in real time. How I determined that was. During the live Perseverance landing, the mars landing team stated “they are and can receive data in real time” likely do to significant technology upgrades. They then stated the next day that they have an “HD video of the Perseverance Rover Entry and landing sequences.

The power system that provides electricity and heat for Perseverance through its exploration of Jezero Crater is a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator, or MMRTG. The U.S. Department of Energy provided it to NASA. Likely begged for it like the they did with their first camera system which was a classified camera developed by Kodak for the CIA.
